New Galveston Terminal Could Bring Premium Cruise Lines

The Port of Galveston has released additional details on the new terminal coming to Galveston, TX – and they’re very exciting!!! Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and The Board of Trustees of the Galveston Wharves entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on December 5, 2018 regarding the new cruise terminal.

The Board of Trustees of the Galveston Wharves formally announced on Wednesday, December 5 that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. setting out the general terms for a new long-term business agreement for the development and operation of a new cruise terminal.

Terminal 3 will occupy the space currently known as Pier 10, located across from UTMB Medical Center near the 1,000 block of Harborside Dr. Ten acres of land has been earmarked for the new terminal, and will include:

  • 200,000 ft² State of the Art Facility
  • Major parking Improvement
  • Passenger Staging & Loading Areas
  • Bus & Taxi Staging Areas

We can conclude from the lease agreement that Royal Caribbean will establish a major presence at the port of Galveston for at least 20 years and as long as 60 years. The initial 20 year term may be extended by exercising up to four 10-year options.

In addition, Royal Caribbean will retain shared access to Terminal 2, which is currently used by Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean cruise lines.  This indicates that Royal Caribbean is likely to add more ships to Galveston, versus swapping them out as they have done in the past.  We could see additional Royal Caribbean brands, such as Celebrity or Azamara, sailing from Galveston as well!
